President's Türk Welcome Letter

Translation

Dear Sir/Madam,

I very much appreciate your invitation to the international ESREA Conference which will take place between 19 and 21 September in Ljubljana. It is with great regret that I have to inform you that I will not be able to attend it personally due to other commitments that have been organized in advance.

Even today, education is frequently a privilege of those who can afford it, but it is also an important factor of social development. It is not only learning and upbringing in educational institutions for children and the young that matters, it is also the learning and education of adults of all ages: for work, for personal development, for active engagement in society, and for a successful cooperation of generations. In the changing demographic conditions, with the relative share of the older generations ever increasing, intergenerational solidarity in particular is the right path to an inclusive, tolerant society. I consider every effort to promote social solidarity and inclusion for all groups and individuals by means of education to be an extremely important contribution to sustainable social development; only in this manner we can build a society of conscious, knowledgeable, critical and thinking citizens who wish and are able to live in and create a participating and solidary society.

I am very glad that Slovenia has the opportunity to host the international scientific conference organized by the Department of Pedagogy and Andragogy, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. For us it is an honour and an opportunity to encourage debate on the importance of learning and education of adults and intergenerational learning. I am confident that the conference will contribute not only to the development of scientific knowledge, but also to social awareness of the importance of learning and education for all generations.

I wish the participants successful work and a pleasant stay in Slovenia.

President of Republic of Slovenia, dr. Danilo Türk
